A Place in the Sun: Property hunter admits feature is ‘not good’

A Place in the Sun’s Jean Johansson left one couple feeling deflated during their property search in Cyprus.

During the episode, which aired on Tuesday night, Jean took couple Maxine and John to Cyprus in a bid to find their dream home with a budget of £150,000.

The couple from County Durham hoped to find a two-bedroom, two-bathroom holiday home near the beach and amenities. They explained they had wiggle room with their budget, and for the “perfect” property, they could stretch to £180,000.

First up on Jean’s list was an apartment priced below their budget at £140,000. The property expert made a good first impression as the house hunters seemed to like it, although John quickly pointed out they weren’t keen on moving to a complex but that he would keep an “open mind.”

Maxine told Jean from the balcony all she could see were the aircon units and water tanks, admitting, “It’s not good, is it?” She later told her husband: “It is a deal breaker for me.”

After rejecting Jean’s first property, the expert tried to win over the house hunters with her second choice – a townhouse priced at £120,000.

Maxine loved how close the property was to the beach, while John loved how much of a “bargain” it was.

“It is ticking a lot of boxes,” Maxine beamed as they strolled through the spacious property to the garden.

Jean failed to impress the couple with one property After telling Jean the second property was a “contender,” the expert showed them the third holiday home – another townhouse.

Despite being priced at £157,000, Maxine and John loved how spacious the property was and said it was a “major improvement” on the second viewing.

One downfall was the property’s distance from the coast; however, Maxine reassured Jean that it “didn’t put them off.”

The fourth property’s location didn’t impress the couple at all, but Jean asked them before the viewing: “I need you to promise me you’ll keep an open mind.”

“I don’t know what to say, really,” Maxine noted as they walked around the property alone, noting another “deal breaker”.

The house hunter later admitted to Jean that they cut the viewing short and “didn’t view all of the rooms” because it wasn’t what they were looking for.

“We didn’t go in all of the rooms, but it is definitely not for us, I’m afraid, Maxine told Jean.

The fifth property on Jean’s list was priced at the higher end of the couple’s budget, at £172,000. Jean admitted she received a “lukewarm” reaction from the couple, who said they were overwhelmed by their choices.

When making a final decision, Maxine and John made an offer on the third property. They decided to try their luck and put in an offer for £140,000, which was rejected.

The seller offered them a counteroffer of £155,000, which was higher than Maxine was willing to pay. However, the couple soon returned with a counteroffer of £144,000, which the seller declined.

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 6pm on Channel 4.
