If you’re looking to up your fried egg game, this secret ingredient could make all the difference.

Eggs are a staple in our kitchens, but despite their versatility, achieving the ideal fried egg – crispy yet tender whites and a beautifully runny yolk – can be quite the culinary feat. When trying to perfect it, it’s not rare to end up with crispy edges, an overcooked base, or a less-than-appealing film on top of the egg.

Flipping the egg could be a solution, but then you’re walking the tightrope of potentially bursting the yolk or ending up with an overdone egg. On social media, however, a food enthusiast going by the name Lindsay has stirred up some hype with her “viral” fried egg hack.

Receiving praise from followers who have tested out her method, she’s decided to share her trick once more for those late to the party. In her TikTok video, she expressed how thrilled people are with her simple addition to the frying pan, which promises the ultimate fried egg experience.

The trick is dead simple – crack your eggs into a dry frying pan, splash in “a dash of water”, then pop a lid on top and let them cook away.

This nifty approach means you won’t end up with any crispy bits around your egg whites, while the lid keeps the steam in, ensuring the eggs are cooked through evenly – giving you that dreamy, runny yolk without any gooey white.

Social media users were quick to express their gratitude to Lindsay for bringing the hack back into the spotlight, with many eager to test it out in their own kitchens.

One satisfied egg enthusiast shared: “I now do them this way. Thank you! Perfect every time.” Another confessed: “I always thought you had to flip them! I need to try this.”

How to fry an egg using the water method Heat the pan: Place a non-stick pan over a medium heat and allow to warm up for a minute or so. Add water: Add about 2-3 tablespoons of water to the pan. You should have enough liquid to cover the bottom of the pan but it should not be a deep layer. Crack the egg: Crack the egg into the pan. The water will start to steam almost immediately. Cover the pan: Place a lid over the pan. This will help trap the steam that cooks the egg. Cook the egg: Leave to cook for 2-4 minutes, depending on how well you want the yolk cooked. For a runny yolk, cook for around two minutes; for a harder yolk, leave for longer. Check, season, and serve: Once the whites are set and no longer translucent and the yolk is cooked to your desired consistency, you can remove the egg from the pan. Season it with salt and pepper and enjoy! Do you have a story to share? Get in touch at yourmirror@trinitymirror.com.
