WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Severance season 2

Following last week’s jaw-dropping twist, Irving (portrayed by John Turturro) was conspicuously missing from the Severed floor. His sudden firing from Lumon left the rest of the MDR team understandably devastated.

In a touching tribute to Irving’s abrupt exit, the team requested a funeral to mourn his departure and come to terms with his forced departure. Intriguingly, Miss Huang (played by Sarah Bock) expressed to Milchick (Trammell Tillman) that she didn’t view the Innies as “people”, leaving her puzzled as to why they were so distraught or needed a funeral for Irving, reports the Express.

Despite this, Irving’s funeral proceeded, with Dylan (Zach Cherry) offering some sage advice, regretting not taking his friend seriously at Woe’s Hollow. Milchick informed Miss Huang about the Bereavement Kits stashed in a storage cupboard, which raises the question: Why does Lumon have bereavement kits to begin with?

Fans have already taken to Reddit to dissect this plot point, with one user posting: “One of my favourite things about Severance is its unexpected quirky left turns in the middle of an otherwise dramatic or poignant scene.

“Case in point, the Irving B watermelon head and coffee mug “party favors” during his funeral service [sic].”

“Notice they had mugs of all the MDR crew inside that storage room, so they have supplies for the bereavement kits in case anyone dies even Helly,” added a third Redditor.

This implies that Lumon has hosted more than one Innie funeral, and they even have kits prepared for such eventualities. However, Petey (Yul Vazquez) didn’t receive a funeral when he abruptly left Lumon in the first season.

Fans have previously queried what happens if someone dies on the floor at Lumon, to which Milchick responded: “Things like deaths happen outside of here. Not here. A life at Lumon is protected from such things.”

Dylan gave a speech at Irving’s funeral ( Image:

Viewers have also been speculating about what happens when an Innie dies. One viewer shared their theory: “The innie actually doesn’t “die”, they just never wake up again. I believed Mark’s innie experienced “death” when Milchick fired his innie, and pushed him back up the elevator. A few seconds later, the elevator opened back up and Mark was once again on the severed floor. Mark’s outie didn’t expect a thing. He said “good night” to Judd even though it was still before 10:00am. I don’t think outies fully understand their innies dying.”

Another simply remarked: “I guess the outie will never find out.”

A third offered their interpretation of Milchick’s words: “Milchick says things like death are protected against at Lumon, if you take it at face value.

“I think we will eventually touch on death and revolving and resurrecting and goats.”

A fourth chimed in with their own theory: “My take on what Milchick said is that the innies are somehow stored on those chips, their conscience so to speak.”
